Luckily my eldest brother, Ret. Col. Consolador Dino Sr., has knowledge about breeding, which he inherited from our clan. He loves going to cockfight coliseums/arena and bet on other fighting cocks of his choice. So, the idea came into mind that instead of risking our bet to other fighting cocks with no knowledge of their breeding and conditioning, we can raise our own fighting cocks and grab the opportunity to become successful breeders and “sabungeros” in the future.
The proposal was presented to my elder brother with myself as the investor for this project. The result…I did not expect that we will have winners in regular fighting cocks and even in derbies. Those winning cocks are still with us and are continuing to produce marvelous fighting cocks. But like in any breed mixtures, there will always be a star. There is a breed that will stand out among the others and those are our BULIKs.
NVD Farm is already known in Laguna, Cavite, Makati, Manila, Bulacan, Sorsogon and Mindoro for our BULIK fighting cocks. The ratio of our BULIK winning cocks is 8-1-1 (8 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss), the others like the MAYAHIN are ranging 3-1 (3 wins and 1 loss) and DALUSAPI 2-2 (2 wins and 2 losses).
I started to panic about the winning ratio of the DALUSAPI, but this handicap was addressed when we identified the problem why we rarely score sweet victories. We experimented to breed our DALUSAPI with our other winning lines and we humbly claim that we were successful in our undertakings. For the current year 2010 harvest, we generated real good DALUSAPI fighters.
In 2009 we opted not to continue with our breeding because of the extremely severe weather forecasts released by PAGASA. It was stated in the weather forecast that the country will run through 13 male typhoons that year. Because of the PAGASA official announcement, we assumed that every month a typhoon might hit the country, so it wasn’t really a good year for breeding more fighting cocks. But we still manage to harvest 75 fighting cocks and because they were born amidst calamities, people believed that they were born to destroy other fighting cocks, which indeed they did.
In 2010, we are able to harvest a range of more than 200 fighting cocks and more than 300 female chickens, all of which were born from January to April. Today, there are ten (10) kinds of breeding lines at NVD Farm and they are as follows: yellow-legged Hatch, Roundhead, Lemon Sweater, Kelso, Melcim, Boston Roundhead, Lemon 84, Democrat, McLean Hatch and Doc Robinson.
At this very moment, almost all of our winning cocks are still with us and are still producing amazing lines so that they will be able to continue winning in other cockfighting competitions. This year we intend to harvest twice, which would mean that we will continue with the breeding process during off seasons.
The breeding is basically done in Manila. Chicks stayed there for two (2) months up to the immunization stage. They are likewise given quality feeds as well as all the necessary vitamins and minerals to ensure excellent condition. After being injected with 4 different kinds of vaccine to protect them against diseases, the chicks are now sent to our hometown in Sorsogon where we have 5 ranges in Sampaloc and 3 ranges in Sts. Peter and Paul Subdivision. We make sure that our fighting cocks get whatever they need, so that come October we will be ready to sell the Stags especially our winning breed, the BULIK. To ensure that you get legitimate fighting cocks from our farm, always look for the NVD wing band. We are confident that our fellow “sabong aficionados” would not undermine this opportunity to purchase winning line fighting cocks.
